In 1987, after Gabriel's demise, was created the Society of Friends of Casa da Flor, currently Cultural Institute Casa da Flor.

Its goals are the to preserve the monument and make it widely known. Throughout the last fourteen years the Society has promoted lectures, debates and round-tables, besides taking to several Brazilian states an itinerant exhibit of photographs, texts, the ground plan and the artist's notebooks. It managed to obtain financial support and sponsorships in order to build a small model of the house, and to microfilm the notebooks for preservation at the National Library, in Rio de Janeiro; it participated in the realization of the film "Casa da Flor" as well as in the film "O Fio da Memória" (Memory's Thread), by Eduardo Coutinho. With the financial support of São Pedro da Aldeia's municipality, it was able to shore up the slope against which lies the building and to replace the roof's timber work.

Always with the active support of the municipal authorities, the Society fought for the expropriation of the building and then, once defined the legal situation of it, strove to obtain the resources provided by the Bill # 8.313 (the National Program of Incentives for the Culture) and channel them into three integrated projects:

  • Restoration: for this project, the National Fund for the Culture contributed 80% of the costs and the Society the remaining 20%.
  • Publication of an Art Book: written by Prof. Amelia Zaluar, it will contain sixty photographs. After the approval of the project by the Ministry of Culture, we will be looking for sponsors, who will be entitled to discounts in the payment of their income taxes.
  • Cultural Revitalization of Casa da Flor: it includes the repairing of the original landscape of the area that was declared to be part of the cultural heritage; the illumination of it and placing of road signs all over; the visual programming, a CD ROM, post cards and posters; and last, not least, the realization of a course about Creativity, for the teachers from Região dos Lagos. This project will need cultural sponsors too.

Our efforts for the preservation of Casa da Flor were acknowledged by the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro, which bestowed on the Society the Estácio de Sá Prize, in the category Heritage, in December 2000.

After we obtained the resources for the restoration of the House, we reached the conclusion that we had to extend and update our work. To that effect our legal status was changed from a civil non-profit association to a non-governmental organization, under the name Instituto Cultural Casa da Flor (Cultural Institute Casa da Flor), thus becoming entitled to apply for resources from abroad.
